Audio Visual Technician

Are you a self-starter with a passion for technology and problem-solving? The Student Union is seeking motivated Audio-Visual Technicians to join our student-run team. Supporting over 600 events and 6,000 reservations annually, we pride ourselves on providing high level event production support and technical assistance in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This role offers competitive pay, career-ready skills, and excellent flexibility that allows students to balance work with academics and other commitments.

As an Audio-Visual Technician, you’ll be supporting a diverse range of programs. These include engaging student events such as comedy shows, karaoke nights, and movie screenings; impactful cultural and community events, and essential institutional programs like campus visits, orientation sessions, as well as governance meetings for groups such as the Undergraduate Student Government and University Senate. You’ll also work on high-profile programs featuring national speakers and significant campus-wide initiatives. Our priority is ensuring a positive event experience for our customers.

The position serves in two main capacities: event production and technical support. For event production, your responsibilities include setting up podiums, microphones, using touch panels and sound boards, assisting customers with laptops, pre-testing and operating AV equipment. You’ll rely on critical thinking and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical issues and anticipate potential challenges before they arise. Shifts vary, with some weeks involving just a couple of events and others hosting up to 15.

In technical support shifts, you’ll assist customers in meeting rooms equipped with TVs, wireless presentation systems, cameras, soundbars, and microphones. Tasks include troubleshooting, guiding users on system operation, and performing routine checks. While you’ll be part of a larger team of 16 student technicians, most shifts are worked independently, making self-reliance and sound judgment essential qualities for success.

This position is not entry-level. We seek candidates with prior work experience, as well as experience in AV or IT, and show preference to those studying in related fields such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Theatre. Students must have a minimum of three semesters remaining before graduation, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred. Training is thorough and includes a mix of in-person instruction and shadowing, and usually is completed in 6-8 weeks.

Benefits:

  • Competitive pay starting at $17/hour with promotion opportunities.
  • Flexible scheduling allows you to balance academic and other commitments with having a campus job
  • Gain hands-on experience with advanced AV systems and real-world troubleshooting.
  • Develop career-ready skills in a professional, dynamic environment to enhance your resume.

Employment is semester-based, with the expectation of continued rehiring for technicians in good standing. Preference is given to students attending the Storrs campus. If you’re ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role that sets you up for future success, we’d love to hear from you.
