Student Union Policy Council
What is Policy Council?
As stated in the Policy Council Constitution:
The Policy Council is the policy board for the University of Connecticut Student Union. The Policy Council shall work with the Director of the Student Union to represent the needs of the student body and campus community through the review of applicable polices, guidelines, and procedures adopted by the University of Connecticut as they apply to the Student Union within the realm of the social, cultural and recreational health of its constituencies.
The Policy Council Consists of 22 voting members and 3 nonvoting members. The voting members are appointed representatives from the student organizations housed within the Student Union, like USG, the Nutmeg Yearbook, OFSL and the Cultural Centers. The Council serves as the student advisory board to the Director of the Student Union. It is Chaired by the Vice President of Policy for the Student Union Board of Governors or SUBOG and meets a minimum of once per month during the academic year. The meetings are public so if there are any issues or questions you may have, feel free to contact the Policy Council Chair.
What Policy Council Does
As stated in the Policy Council Constitution:
- The Student Union Policy Council shall consider, review, and recommend policies impacting Student Union programming and Student Union facility usage.
- The Student Union Policy Council may, at the direction of the Director of the Student Union, consider, review, or recommend any policies created or considered by the University of Connecticut.
- The Policy Council may consider the annual and long-term budgets of the Student Union.
- The Policy Council may consider requests for, develop the process of, and assign office space to student organizations that have been designated for student organization use by the Student Union.
The Policy Council’s major role is to represent the student voice in the decisions of the Student Union. Representatives of each major student organization are asked to serve on the council for the year to help provide insight and debate on various issues. In the past years we have worked on commuter lockers, the Doug Bernstein game room, space requests and the Blue Cow.
